Have you ever attended a study or religious lecture, then in the midst of the delivery of the ustadz that touched or was funny, the pilgrims immediately gave a festive applause? Or even you have done it yourself? This phenomenon is increasingly common, especially on studies broadcast on TV or social media. But the question is, can you actually give a applause in the midst of the Science Council?
In our culture, applause is often considered a form of appreciation. In fiqh glasses, are there legal and ethical limits in attending the Science Council? Is applause including good manners or even deviate from the traditions of the scholars? This article will discuss lightly but in depth, what exactly is the law of applause during lectures, and how our attitude should be the prosecutor of knowledge.
Applause, between culture and religion
In this day and age, applause is a natural thing to show a sense of admiration or agree. We can see for ourselves, in concerts, general seminars, or TV shows, applause almost always appear as a form of appreciation. It has become part of the habits of modern society. It’s just that, even though it becomes a habit, what needs to be a further concern is about the law of clapping itself, according to fiqh glasses. Is it permissible, or even the status is something to avoid? For example, not allowed, are there certain conditions, for example in lectures, councils of science and others, the law of inequity can change (conditional)?
To understand the basic law of applause, following the explanation from Imam Bajuri on Hasyiah ‘ala Fath Al-Qarib might be an answer:
And he signed in the description of the external practice, and he said, he is forbidden by the intent of the play and disturbed it, but rather the intent of the play by the purpose of playing play, and if there is a kind of rain in it, this is the one who is the one one is in the son of a. because it is from their condition, but it is his hatred

Explanation of the information above as follows: Ulama Different opinions regarding the law Tasfiq (applause) outside the prayer: First, Some think: illegal do it for play purposes, and if not for play purposes. This is an opinion held by Ar-Ramli. Second, Another opinion states: Makruh even with the aim of playing around, especially if there is an element of entertainment or pleasure (ṭarab) in it. This is an opinion held by Ibnu Hajar in Syarḥ Al -Rsyād. Third, There are also those who argue: haram if applause is done with the intention to resemble a woman, because applause is their habit (typical function). But if not with this intention, then the law is makruh.
So, basically, related to the law of applause (outside the prayer), the scholars differ in opinions. It’s just that, what needs to be underlined is the difference above if the status of applause is not something that is really needed. In other words, there is no motive for clapping.
The view of the ulama about applause at the Science Council
Then, what if applauding is based on a need, such as in a lecture case, so that it is more enthusiastic in the process of listening to knowledge, or adding enthusiasm during the procession of remembrance, and so forth? Imam Bajuri in the same book, explains:
If he needs it to irritate memory, as did the poor or to pour, as Jurisprudence did at night, or for night. The treasurer of the lesson was not prohibited, but maybe it was ignored
From the information above, we can understand if the applause is needed to: First, To arouse the spirit of memory, as well as fuqarāʼ (Sufism or Sufi). Second, Or to regulate the rhythm of livestock, as is usually done by fiqh experts at night. Third, Or for teaching purposes, as did the teachers during the lesson. So the law is not haram, it can even be recommended (allowed with a positive value) if there is indeed that need.
So, from the information above, we can conclude in the case of lectures, applause can be legalized, even recommended, if there is a need. However, if without basis or motive, then return to the original law, that the ulama still differ in opinion.
