– I saw Ibn Umar pulling his beard and cutting off what was more than the palm of his hand, and he said that when the Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, broke his fast, he would say, “The thirst is gone, the veins are wet, and the reward is certain, God willing.”
I saw Ibn ‘Umar holding his beard and cutting off what was beyond his reach, and he said that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, when he broke his fast, he said, “Dzhahabazh zhoma-u wabtallatil-‘urūqu wa tsabatal ajru insyā allāh (Meaning: the thirst has vanished, the veins have moistened, and the reward has been determined, God willing).”
Summary of Law according to muḥaddits: This Hadith Hasan | Narrator: Abdullah bin Umar | Muḥaddith: Al-Albani | Source: Saḥiḥ Abu Dawud | Page or number: 2357 | Takhrīj: Narrated by Abu Dawud (11) and here are the editors, Ibn Khuzaimah (60), and Ad-Dāraquṭnī (1/58).
Explanation of Hadith
In this hadith, Marwān bin Sālim – one of the tabiin – reported that he saw ‘Abdullāh bin ‘Umar Radhiyallāhu ‘anhumā holding his beard and then cutting off the part that was more than his hand could hold.”
That is, he made his beard as long as his hand, then the hair that was longer than his hand was cut and shaved by him. This includes Ibn ‘Umar’s understanding of how to let a beard grow and groom it.
Then the narrator mentions another narration from Ibn ‘Umar who said, “Rasulullah Shallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam when breaking the fast,” namely from his fast, “he said,” namely after breaking the fast, “Dzhahabazh zhoma-u (his thirst disappeared)” that is, his thirst disappeared because he drank water or something else.
Here there are indications that the feeling of thirst for people who fast is more severe than hunger, especially in the hot weather which is characteristic of the Hijaz Country. Therefore, the joy of the disappearance of thirst takes precedence over the joy of the disappearance of hunger.
“Wabtallatil ‘urūqu (the vessels have become wet)” means that the vessels in the body which were previously dry (dehydrated) due to extreme thirst have now become wet again (hydrated).
“Wa tsabatal ajru insyā’allāh (Meaning: and the reward has been determined, God willing),” which is a prayer and hope for God Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala to obtain reward and reward for fasting and tiredness in worship.
This is a motivation to worship and continue to repeat it, because fatigue has disappeared while the reward remains with the will of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala. This is also good news from the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam, because whoever succeeds in achieving his goals and gets what he wants after fatigue and hardship, then he should be happy with the rewards and rewards that Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala promises.
