Understanding the Meaning of True Happiness | Tebuireng Online

The wheel of life is always turning and of course sometimes there are those who are below and those who are above. Life’s surprises can always make the heart beat and even tremble. Feelings of joy, sadness, suffering and emptiness are some examples. Everyone wants the best for their life, including a happy life.

Most people feel that when they have everything such as abundant wealth, position, position, fame and life with loved ones they will be happy. The difficulties in life that I have experienced have caused some people to think that if I were rich I would definitely be happy. If I had a position, I would definitely be happy. If I could be famous and earn a lot of money, I would definitely be happy. If I had a car I would be happy.

Regarding the word “happy” itself, what is the true meaning of happiness? Can having abundant wealth make your life happy? Does eating delicious food every day mean you can always go to a restaurant to be happy? Is it happy when you can travel abroad? Or does living with your loved one make you happy? Can happiness only be measured by world standards? Reporting from the Grant study, a study conducted by Harvard Medical University, for 75 years researched what happiness is.

According to this research, happiness is based on 3 things. How do we relate and interact with those around us. Humans are social creatures, and if this goes out of function then slowly, it will have the first impact connection on his psychology. If a person’s relationship with those around him is warm and good, then you can be sure it will also have a good impact on him.

Second, namely Confidence or belief. A benchmark or principle that a person uses as an assessment in life or can also be called a perspective (Way of life).

Third, how a person responds and behaves when facing tests and problems that hit his life. How he can survive and motivate himself. According to this research, happiness is not about what you have, not about what happens to you, or not about what you don’t have. Rather, happiness is a way of responding outwardly based on 3 things, namely connection (connection), confidence (self-confidence) and the way a person faces problems in his life.

Meanwhile, what is the meaning of happiness according to Islam?

In the Qur’an, Allah explains:

Know that the life of this world is nothing but games, entertainment, adornment and boasting among yourselves and the increase in wealth and children is like rain. The disbelievers admire its growth, then become irritated and you see it turn yellow, then become rubble, and in the afterlife there will be painful punishment and forgiveness from Allah. And your satisfaction and the life of this world are nothing but imaginary pleasures. 20

“Know that the life of this world is just a game, delay, adornment, and mutual bragging among you and competing for the abundance of wealth and offspring. (QS Al-Hadid :20)

From the verse above it can be concluded that if you want to seek happiness in life, which is based on the world, then it will definitely fail. because it is mortal (not eternal). This world is just deception and temporary pleasure. One day it will run out. For example, there are many rich people, but that doesn’t guarantee they will live happily. There are even those who commit forbidden acts, namely committing suicide. There are also lots of rows public figure famous but unhappy, even caught in a drug case.

This proves that whatever you seek to obtain happiness in life, relying on the world will be in vain because this is only a momentary pleasure and not complete happiness. If he knows the nature of the world, a wise Muslim will definitely choose something good rather than bad, prioritizing eternal happiness over momentary pleasure.

Allah says in Qs Al-Imron: 14.

Adorned to mankind is the love of women and children, and curved quintals of gold and silver, and beautiful horses and cattle. And farming, that is the enjoyment of worldly life, and in the sight of Allah is a good destination. 14

“It is made beautiful in (the view of) humans the love of what they desire, namely: women, children, large amounts of wealth in the form of gold, silver, chosen horses, livestock and rice fields. That is the joy of life in this world, and in the sight of Allah is a good return (heaven).”

From the verse above, Allah SWT conveys that He has decorated human life as a test for them with a love of worldly pleasures, such as women, boys, large and abundant wealth in the form of gold and silver, well-marked and well-marked horses, livestock in the form of camels, cows and goats, and agriculture. It is a pleasure of life in the world that can be enjoyed for a certain period of time and then lost.

So a believer should not depend on this pleasure for his life. Only Allah has a good place to return to, and whatever in life is based on Him, the Most Eternal Essence, that is where true happiness lies. The best actions are those that can lead us to His pleasure and love.
