Tebuireng.online– The Tebuireng Putri Kesamben Islamic Boarding School achieved a proud achievement as an “Eco Islamic Boarding School” at the East Java level. This award was given in the Eco Pesantren program initiated by the East Java Provincial Government and presented at the award ceremony which took place on Wednesday (24/12/2025), at the Graha Wisata Surabaya building.
This award was received by the representative of the Tebuireng Putri Kesamben Islamic Boarding School, Ustadz Mansur, as Head of the Tebuireng Kesamben Science Boarding School in 2025. Of the dozens of Islamic boarding schools in East Java, only around 20 Islamic boarding schools have succeeded in achieving the Eco Pesantren title, and the Tebuireng Putri Kesamben Islamic Boarding School is one of them.

Head of the Kesamben Science Boarding School for 2024, Ustadz Mudhfar, who coordinated all preparations for Eco Pesantren, explained that this award was a motivation for the entire Islamic boarding school community. “Eco Pesantren for the Tebuireng Kesamben Islamic Boarding School is motivation and encouragement so that the efforts we make together with the teachers, ustadz, ustadzah and students to make the Islamic boarding school clean, beautiful, beautiful and comfortable can be realized and receive support from all parties,” he said.
However, he emphasized that Eco Pesantren is not the final goal. “Eco Islamic Boarding School is not a dream, because there is still homework that must continue to be addressed so that it truly becomes an eco and independent Islamic boarding school,” he added.

According to Ustadz Mudhfar, there are no special superior programs that are highlighted. Commitment to maintaining the cleanliness and beauty of the environment is actually the main strength. “We are committed to keeping the Islamic boarding school environment clean and beautiful. This has become an attraction for visitors, both Islamic boarding school guardians and government agencies, until finally our Islamic boarding school was targeted by the Jombang Regency Environmental Service to represent it at the East Java level,” he explained.

Initially, there were five Islamic boarding schools fostered by the Jombang Regency Environmental Service (DLH), then they narrowed down to two Islamic boarding schools. “Thank God, our Islamic boarding school has succeeded in getting the title of Eco Pesantren at East Java level,” he said.

The head of MTs Science said that the Eco Pesantren concept will begin to be implemented in 2024 after receiving guidance from the Environmental Service (DLH) and other Islamic boarding schools that have previously won similar awards. “At first we didn’t know the concept of Eco Pesantren. After there was guidance, then we started developing and implementing it,” he said.
In its implementation, the role of Islamic boarding school leaders is the main key. “All programs must start from the top. The head of the boarding school carries out communication and outreach, then works together with the head of the madrasah, teachers, staff, and even cleaning and security employees so that this program is supported by all parties,” he said.
Various environmentally friendly habits have now become a culture among students. “Students are required to throw rubbish in the right place, sort rubbish according to type, keep their rooms and surroundings clean, exercise regularly every Friday, and eat healthy food,” explained Ustadz Mudhfar.
In environmental management, Islamic boarding schools apply the 3R principles. “We have implemented Reduce and Reuse. For Recycling, we are collaborating with the Tebuireng Waste Bank and the Jombang Main Waste Bank. For water and energy, we are still at the stage of a usage-saving campaign,” he said.

He admitted that the biggest challenges emerged in the early stages of implementation. “The hardest thing was when we started. But because from the start we were committed to being a clean Islamic boarding school, the adjustment didn’t take long. Our Eco Pesantren concept is from the students, by the students, and for the students,” he said.
According to him, Islamic values are the main basis for building environmental awareness. “We are guided by Islamic values and Hadratussyaikh’s harakah. There are many references to the obligation to protect the earth, cleanliness and health. Supported by science, this concept is becoming increasingly integrated,” he said.
The impact of the Eco Pesantren program is felt in real terms. “The environment has become beautiful and beautiful. Clean and healthy living has become easier to live. Previously, students suffering from scurvy were considered normal, but now it has become something foreign. Apart from that, there is an economic impact because waste can be valuable and the use of water and energy becomes more efficient,” he said.
In the future, the Tebuireng Putri Kesamben Islamic Boarding School is committed to continuing this program. “We want to continue Eco Pesantren to the next stage. Moreover, supported by the Adiwiyata program in madrasas, two goals can be achieved in one row,” he said. He also hopes that this Islamic boarding school can become a model Islamic boarding school. “In the future, we need full support from the Tebuireng Islamic boarding school, especially the Kyai and Bu Nyai, foundations, environmental services and other Islamic boarding school partners so that the ECO journey of the Tebuireng Putri Kesamben Islamic boarding school can run as desired,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, Ustadz Mansur expressed his gratitude for this achievement. “I am grateful that the Tebuireng Putri Kesamben Islamic Boarding School was able to receive the Eco Pesantren award. Of the many Islamic boarding schools, only around 20 received it, and Kesamben is one of them,” he said.
He considered this award to be a challenge at the same time. “This is a challenge so that the Tebuireng Putri Kesamben Islamic Boarding School remains consistent in protecting the environment, not only during competitions, but also as a character for the administrators, students and the entire extended family of the Islamic boarding school,” he stressed.
The Eco Pesantren Award itself is a program of the Governor of East Java, so the award won by the Tebuireng Putri Kesamben Islamic Boarding School is at the East Java regional level and is proof of the Islamic boarding school’s commitment to preserving the environment based on Islamic values.
